What is Krav Maga?
Created by Imi in the Second World War, Krav Maga is a set of simple skills designed to prepare ordinary people for extraordinary situations. Taught to the vulnerable in the Ghettoes of Bratislava, it proved so successful at delivering self defence that it was adopted by the Israeli Defence Forces after the war. It has now spread globally and is now the most battle-tested, consistently used system in the world today. Krav Maga’s strengths lie not just in its simple techniques, but in its methodology. Krav teaches that if you have to fight, you must do so with total commitment. Simultaneous attack and defence are common in its movements, as are simple, rapid combatives or striking. Krav practitioners are taught to close quickly, fight hard and fast and get out alive.
Social Responsibility and a great training environment.
Krav Maga certainly teaches aggression in the face of violence. But it’s important to understand that this applies to the fight itself. Before that point, before the point where the Krav Maga practitioner feels the need to use aggression and violence in self defence, there are another set of skills that should be utilised. We train ordinary people to protect themselves within the bounds of law. This means awareness first and foremost. Avoidance second. De-escalation skills third. Violent action fourth. We don’t encourage violence or aggression and you won’t be exposed to these attitudes in class. On the contrary: we teach an array of different skills designed to handle aggression in a non violent way and we back that up by delivering a physical skillset that will end violence quickly and effectively if that becomes necessary. It is our experience that combat skill, skill with violence, dramatically decreases the need to use that skill. You walk with more confidence. You don’t make an easy target. And when you attempt to de-escalate, you stand a better chance of doing so if you have the courage to back it up. We train ordinary people, not fighters. This reflects in the great atmosphere you’ll find when you train at Krav Maga North Bristol. People here are ego-free and eager to help you learn. We guarantee it.
How is Krav Maga different to Martial Arts?
Krav Maga is focused entirely on simplicity and realism. If it’s complicated or hard to learn, it won’t be taught and it won’t work in the real world. Krav Maga is a field-stripped ‘martial art’ with the sole focus on surviving and escaping. There is a strong emphasis on simple, natural movements, as these are are faster to learn and more effective under stress. Krav Maga values a practical and realistic approach to training. It has no sporting or competitive elements.
Where does Krav Maga Come from?
Krav Maga comes from Israel. The system was developed as a simple and effective method of teaching conscripts how to protect themselves should they be captured or loose their weapon. The Krav Maga training proved so successful that it is now used by over 500 military and law enforcement agencies across the world. Krav Maga is the only ‘martial art’ with over 70 years continuous battlefield use and testing.
Who learns Krav Maga?
Everybody can learn Krav Maga. We do teach professionals – soldiers, police officers and close protection officers – but at Krav Maga North Bristol most of our students are civilians. It’s suitable for anyone, with the exception of a very few specific medical issues. It’s designed to teach ordinary people to deal with conflict effectively and confidently. It’ll get you fit too!
Forged in real world conflict
The biggest question to ask when choosing a combative discipline to study is does it work? And a simple yes doesn’t suffice. You need evidence. To authenticate Krav Maga, we offer the fact that it is currently taught as the principal method of hand to hand combat to over 500 military and law enforcement agencies worldwide. It is in current use on the streets of cities and in warzones. It is trusted by people who put their lives on the line to protect others. It is the go-to system all over the world and has been for decades. If it didn’t work, if ordinary people couldn’t learn real skill, it wouldn’t have this reputation.
Pirated – copied – and imitated
Krav Maga’s reputation is such that numerous unscrupulous individuals attempt to cash in on the name. The range of charlatans and imitators is so extensive than it can be difficult to find real Krav Maga. If it’s prefaced XXXXX Krav Maga then it almost certainly isn’t real Krav Maga
